Truman Capote with a handsome killer. Go figure that one out.

Truman looks like Frasier Crane.

Truman Capote could write and also tap into the dark human soul, which, between you and me, and anyone else listening, is an interesting place to explore.

Who will history be more curious about.....Charles Manson or Rick Santorum?

Capote only wrote the one book In Cold Blood. I suspect he was dabbling with writing a book on the Tate-Labianca killings but decided he couldn't compete with Bug's literary success with Helter Skelter which by the way was co-wrote with an excellent editor, Curt Gentry. Without Gentry I sincerely doubt Bug's book would have been so readable. If you doubt that then try reading Bug's other books. Helter Skelter is fabulously more readable with Gentry's help as editor. Gentry also co-wrote many very successful sports books in the 60s and 70s such as Green Bay Packer great Jerry Kramer's first book, Instant Replay, which was about the glory days of Vince Lombardi as Packer head coach. It was that book that led to Gentry being chosen to edit Bug's first book Helter Skelter. So in a way it is Curt gentry that made Manson and Bugliosi a household name. Any Packer fan knows who Jerry Kramer is due to Curt gentry's help with writing Instant Replay.

TomG said...

When I was in junior high school, the only book most of us had read cover to cover was Instant Replay by Jerry Kramer. That and Ball Four by Jim Bouton.

That and Tom Wolfe and Kurt Vonnegut and the world according to Garp and all of that.

Truman Capote also wrote Breakfast at Tiffany's so he was by no means a one trick pony.

Take it from me, never, ever, never, ever, sever, ever, quever, never.....attempt to patch up things with an old girlfriend if you are on an all day bender.

You can take these wise words from me instead of waking up in county jail looking at cinder block and saying what happend?

katie8753 said...

Tom I don't know if George Huguely killed her but I guess the evidence suggested that he did.

I followed that case for a while but lost track.

What a waste of talent. Both his and hers.

Somebody killed her.

They were both top of their game. What a tragedy....

TomG said...

I did follow the case.

He didn't mean to kill her, but he did. Same result. Dead is dead.

Poirot replies:

I'm surprised how common it is for young women to get murdered. I really can't understand why any woman would not carry a gun in their purse and their auto or keep one in their house at all times. The world is full of sociopaths and control freaks jacked up on firewater. Women are easy prey for these types of guys yet for some strange reason women feel safe when in truth they don't stand a chance in hell of surviving an all out attack by an adult male.
My longest relationship lasted 20 years and there wasn't a single day I worried about her safety because I knew she carried a gun in her pocketbook. Yet women are murdered every day by the dozen simply because they don't like guns. Can't women understand that a gun is a last resort? If they never get attacked then they needn't ever even have to look at the gun much less fire it. Just put it in a pockerbook and leave it there. Why do young women put their parents through a lifetime of grieving just because they don't like guns. Liking guns has nothing to do with carrying a gun.

I never quite understood, why all the ladies went completely ga-ga over this guy... but, I have to admit, this photo finally answered that question for me...

As Tom said in his first post... Bobby is a handsome man in this photo.
He's young and handsome... there's just no getting around it.

Not that either of us are gay or anything... LOL

(Not, that there's anything wrong with that). LOL

He looks a lot better here, than in that top-hat photo at the top of the stairs, with leather mocassins laced-up to his knees... or, certainly that photo where he's getting stuffed into the police car, with that nasty grimace on his face.

I guess I just never caught him from the right angle.
AHahahaha
LMAO

OK...
I'm gonna stop now, this is just feeling a little too gay.

I added the full Truman Capote interview from 1973... for anyone who cares to read and discuss it.

Both Katie and Poirot have both asked to see this published in the past... and, this would obviously be the most appropriate time.

Peace... Lynyrd

Miss Spiritual Tramp 1979 said...

haha..Lynyrd your post was awesome..flame it up...it's okay though Bobby B has that effect on most women, men, animals, beasts etc.

Oh and I LOVE the footage of Bobby making all those cute faces into the camera...I swear when I watch that I go into a trance...it's his Scorpio power in full effect.

Sorry Lynyrd, I think Bobby is my real soulmate (maybe yours too)...someone needs to release him so I can at least make out with him.

Miss Spiritual Tramp 1979 said...

...and I was only kidding about that last part...or was I???
In any event I am aware that often times people do not get my humour.

katie8753 said...

This interview is very interesting. Look at Bobby back in 1973 compared to the new, family man Bobby of 2012. Quite a contrast.

Capote mentions knowing Sharon, Jay, Abigail, Frykowski and Oswald.

Bobby discusses the "copy cat" motive. He also says the victims weren't so innocent.

Capote asks Bobby if he was released on parole, would he kill again for Charlie or someone else.

Bobby says: "I might. It depends. I never meant to ... to ... hurt Gary Hinman. But one thing happened. And another. And then it all came down."

Bobby was still a badass back in 1973.

>>>Matt said: priscilla johnson,learys old friend!>>>

HA HA. Leary, where are you old chap?

In the interview Bobby says that the victims "got what they deserved".

I wonder if he really thought that, or he was just saying it.

He's not exactly a pillar of truth. LOL.

Miss Spiritual Tramp 1979 said...

I seem to recall on Bobby's old site that he addressed this interview and indicated that Capote misquoted him and took great liberties with what was actually said. I could totally see that happening to some degree as Capote's slant here is pretty obvious.

katie8753 said...

Hi Missy!

Did Bobby say what was misquoted?

Miss Spiritual Tramp 1979 said...

Hi Katie..I wish I could remember the specifics maybe someone else with a better memory than I can recall more.

I think its fair to say that as Bobby is certainly no "pillar of truth" neither is Capote. He had a story to sell and everyone has an agenda.

katie8753 said...

>>>He had a story to sell and everyone has an agenda.>>>

Yes Missy that is true. Capote was in the business to sell stories. And Bobby was in the business of trying to be a tough guy.

I think that everyone involved in this case had or has an agenda.

I just wish there was one source of information, past or present, that was the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

But there always seems to be slanting and exaggeration...sigh.

Miss Spiritual Tramp 1979 said...

Yes Katie and I think that is exactly why this case is so alluring to so many. Its like a never ending puzzle, trying to put everything together in a rational way but some pieces just don't fit and after a while you realize its probably unsolvable but you just can't stop trying to figure it out.

katie8753 said...

Missy you've hit the nail on the head. We keep trying to figure this puzzle out, but "the faster we go, the behinder we get". LOL.

For example, this new book Restless Souls is a bit of a disappointment to me.

Some of it is believable and some of it isn't. The character Paul Tate has been morphed into a combination of Sam Spade, Clint Eastwood and add a dash of DeNiro in the Focker movies (fingers to eyes...."I'm watching you".)

It's a good thing ole Col Tate can't read this. Or on the other hand, he might have been flattered. LOL.

And some of the things said about Doris just don't ring true.

But it is an interesting read. I like fiction and non-fiction alike. HA HA.

Miss Spiritual Tramp 1979 said...

Interesting that you mention that Katie as I started reading that book this morning and got to page 7and was in tears.

I have to say that the description of what Doris endured in the hours leading up to and then the confirmation of Sharon's murder was very moving.
The sheer terror that lady went through for some reason just profoundly effected me and I cannot even fully comprehend it as I am not a mother myself.(well except to our Meow Mix Manson =^..^=)

katie8753 said...

Yeah Missy the first chapter or so and the description of the funeral was very heartbreaking, but as the book goes into Col Tate's sleuthing and Doris having a breakdown because Sharon left Italy for the US, I just started scratching my head.

I'm just trying to sort out fact from possible exaggeration.

Miss Spiritual Tramp 1979 said...

Well for sure...we must question everything....we already know there is an obvious bias here and it's our job to sort out fact from possible fiction..okay I am going to go read some more of it. Bye Katie

Poirot replies:

Having listened to Capote many times back in the 70s on everything from Johnny Carson to academic discussions on PBS I'd have to say that I found Capote to be extremely honest. Even though he was a tiny, strange gay alcoholic I think it was his courage to honest was what I admired about him. In that aspect I'd say Capote was a giant of a man. Just because you can't bench press 300lbs doesn't mean you aren't you aren't a giant among men.

My beef with Beausoleil then and now is his unwillingness to admit Manson's power over him. If Bobby had not known Manson he most likely would never have killed anyone in his entire life.

katie8753 said...

Thanks Mr. P. I always thought that Capote was a strange little man, but I think he ate, slept and drank the story he was working on.

I know that when he wrote In Cold Blood, he got to know the killers (especially Perry Smith) very well. He spent a lot of time with them to be able to write the story.

>>>My beef with Beausoleil then and now is his unwillingness to admit Manson's power over him. If Bobby had not known Manson he most likely would never have killed anyone in his entire life.>>>

I agree with that. I don't see any reason why Bobby would have killed anyone if he had never met Manson.

If he wants to say he killed Gary because Gary was going to rat him out to the cops, then maybe that's true, but the reason he was even there was because of Manson. And Manson cutting Gary's ear off only worsened the situation. I think if it had not been for that, Bobby might have just took the girls and left Gary alone. I think it would have ended differently.

Notice in the Capote-Beausoleil interview how fascinated Beausoleil was with some of the things Capote knew and people Capote had met. Even tough guy Beausoleil was almost mezmerized by Capote's intellect. Beausoleil was even shocked at how Capote was not afraid to walk alone in the prison yard without a guard with him. I think the pic Lynyrd posted is very interesting because it shows Beausoleil trying to show Capote that he had talent and abilities too(guitar). I never got the impression Capote was impressed with Beausoleil in any manner. Perhaps that pic reveals Beausoleils egotism.
I had never seen that pic before.

katie8753 said...

Hi Bobby!

I tend to agree with Mr. P. that Capote was just asking questions and getting answers.

Was this article printed in a magazine or newspaper? It certainly didn't garner a whole lot of attention. It's just one article on a "minor" member of the Manson Family.

And when I say "minor" I mean that in 1969 when this story first broke about who the killers were, Bobby's name wasn't mentioned at all. It was constantly Manson, Tex, Pat, Leslie, Susan & Linda in the papers day after day.

In fact, I'd never even really heard of Bobby, Bruce, Clem, etc. until the Helter Skelter book came out.

Hinman's murder was kind of overlooked because of the Cielo Drive murders. I mean, at the time it was.

Having said all that, I wish that this interview had been on tape and we could watch and listen to it. Then we'd see exactly who said what.

It's easy to say someone did something to you when they're not alive to refute it.

From the Official Tate LaBianca Murders Blog:

>>> And according to Statman, “no one believes” the story of the prison meeting, especially when they likely knew each other long before. That maybe the “random” targeting of the LaBianca house wasn’t so random.<<<<

That's what i've been saying all along, but the EXPERTS (rolls eyes) always say otherwise.

Once you unplug your mind from the Helter Skelter mind fuck that Bugliosi used to convict the funky bunch, you begin to see a more sinister plot emerge in regards to what happened at the LaBianca residence. Also remember that Nader was on the agenda that night too.

As usual, ColScott is late to the dance, but in time enough to drink from the punch bowl of truth.

Also, my sincere condolences to ColScott on his battle with Cancer. I had no idea that the Colonel had been ill.

The Colonel and I have crossed swords many times over the years, but I'm very happy to know that he's won the toughest battle of them all.

ColScott was a real life Mean Mr Mustard at one time, but now i think he's more like Sgt Pepper who's just come down from a bad acid trip from a day in the life.

Best wishes on your recovery Colonel and make sure that you find the time in life to do the things that are important to you because this magical mystery tour that we all take eventually comes to an end.

katie8753 said...

Hi Bobby.

Well it looks likes Bo-so-lay is still changing his story.

First it was was drugs, then it was about money, then he claimed Manson killed Gary, then he admitted he killed Gary, and I guess in November of 1981, it was back to drugs that made him to to Gary's house in July of 1969.

You've gotta hand it to this guy...he knows when to hold 'em...and when to fold 'em.

Truth is Manson needed money, and he heard from Ella Jo that Gary inherited money. Manson called Gary to join the Family, knowing that upon induction, you gave all your money to said Family. Gary refused. He didn't need any part of those dirty spartans other than helping out from time to time. He had bigger fish to fry. Manson threatened Gary if he didn't join. Gary hung up.

Manson sends Bobby to get Gary's money. Manson also sends Sadie & Mary. He knew that Gary would open the door if the girls were there.

postscript: Manson held something over Tex's head to get him to murder, but not Bobby. Or maybe he did, and we just don't know about it.....

The rest of the story you already know. Bobby killed Gary.

And if he wants to say that his trial was sidelined by Danny, that's his choice, but the fact remains that he killed Gary.

And if he wants to say he never said the things in the Capote interview, that's his choice too.

He's trying desperately to get out on parole. He has another "family" now.

I say let the chips fall where they may.

From the interview:

>>>ALB: In his interview, you are very pro-Manson family…it was all justifiable homicide etc. Have you changed your views?

BB: My stand on that, if you want to call it that, hasn't changed. What I've been explaining to you is basically what I was trying to explain to him. I tried to take it [the murders] in some way out of that interpretation of the senseless robot murder machine type of image and make them perhaps just a little bit more understandable...Oh, this is sick. Anyone who would do something like this is, as far as I'm concerned, sicker than anything he's trying to call sick. That is totally irresponsible journalism. And this guy [Capote] is supposed to be somebody...>>>

"just a little bit more understandable"????

I rest my case.

katie8753 said...

Bobby if we could hear the verbal interview between Capote & Cupid, we might could sort thru what was really said to whom.

But other than that, we're playing verbal volleyball. :)

katie8753 said...

Hi Leary.

I have to agree with you, the last 3 summers have been BRUTAL.

But it's not normally like this. It's hot in the summer..no doubt about it...but not THIS hot. Normally it's pleasantly warm until August or September, and then back to mild in October. Our nice season begins in October and then starts warming up usually in June.

I don't personally believe in El Nino or El Nina. I've lived in Texas too long to believe in that.

Sometimes it's hot...and sometimes it's not. HA HA.

Miss Spiritual Tramp 1979 said...

Bobby...thanks for finding the OUI Magazine interview. I am fairly certain that was the one which appeared on Bobby's site.

I do not know what to really make of it all but I do know this..Capote was a master of his craft and as such clearly had the upper hand in this situation.

If it went down thw way Bobby says and he was in fact mislead as to what was going to be discussed it would explain the evasiveness and posturing in his answers as well as all of the dramatic "silences".

I have no doubt Capote outwitted him and from my vantage point exploited the situation to the fullest.

katie8753 said...

Bobby & Missy:

I understand what you're trying to portray about Bobby.

And I understand why.

You want to think he squeaky clean. But he's not.

He killed Gary Hinman. Why? Because (a) Charlie said or because (b) he was afraid Gary was going to the police. Take your choice. Both reasons were given by him. It's by his own admittance.

His artwork and music SUCKS. By his own words, he's a bohemian. Meaning he doesn't understand music or art.

I don't want to alienate Bobby or Missy, but I can't just pretend that Bobby B. is right.

I think he's a murdering asshole that changes his story "du jour" or "ad hoc" to suit whomever is asking, and I can't imagine anyone thinks he should get out.

He can just stay in stir and write his stupid music and artwork until he's 6 foot under.

Period!!!

I'll give you my true unbiased feelings on this book Restless Souls.

I had high hopes that this book was going to reveal some truths that I had long sought.

But in the end, this Alisa Statman was just another con artist, just like Bill Nelson.

She saw a way to garner her way to some money.

I don't know how she got Col Tate to give her the house she's living in, nor how she got Patti's kids from her ex-husband, but she figured it out.

And now she's written a book, and talked Brie into it, that is such nonsense that it would make a Tasmianian Devil turn in circles.

So much for the truth.

Bobby has a real beef about the Capote interview but I don't understand why. Capote toured San Quenton on his own unescorted. Capote was obviously at the prison for multiple reasons. He was looking at conditions there and he also interviewed Bobby. I suspect Capote interviewed other inmates as well.

I just don't think Capote saw much intellect in Bobby. Bobby was also being distant and his statements seemed simplistic. That type of interview peobably bored Capote. I don;t think a little guy like Capote was the type to be impressed by macho bravado.

Well it looks like Bobby & Missy are mad at me for what I said. They both claim they didn't say anything that was positive toward Bobby.....but I defer to their own comments. They both say that Capote distorted Bobby's words and he never said all that:

Both of you made these comments in this thread.

Now you're trying to say that you never took Bobby's side? It's obvious you did.

Does being friends mean you have to agree on everything?

I don't like Bobby Bo-sa-lay. I think he's a creep. I don't care about the interview. He lied on the stand and lied again and again.

Now he wants out. Too fucking bad.

And Bobby and Missy if you like him that much to be offended that I said that....so be it.

I will not put down my armor to defuse suffragettes.

Bobby & Missy, I don't want to be at odds with either of you, but I won't kowtow to anyone.

My thoughts are my thoughts. I don't know about Truman Capote, but I DO KNOW that Bobby B. is a LIAR. I don't like him.

katie8753 said...

Bobby killed Gary. There's no doubt about it.

Maybe you don't care about Gary. What's to care? He wasn't a starlet trying to make it big. He wasn't a big time hairdresser to the stars.

He was just a guy that had a master's degree, which most folks back in 1969 didn't even dare to achieve.

He wasn't manufacturing drugs. He was just a guy that wanted to be nice.

To the wrong people.

He kept Mary's baby when she was arrested and the baby was going to be taken by child protective services. He was just a guy that let Bobby live there when he was down and out.

Bobby doesn't seem to remember all that.

Bobby killed him. He stabbed him in the heart. Then he cleaned up and went out the window. Made a "paw print" on the wall with his blood. Stole his German cars.

According to him, went back and said it was a trip because the maggots were eating him.

What a guy!!! My hat's off to BOBBY!!!

So someone comes along and says that Truman Capote did a mis-step.

WAH WAH WAH. Poor Bobby. Does he need more pablum? Does he need a binky???

FUCK HIM!!

katie8753 said...

Bobby & Missy I hope you're not mad at me, but I will have my opinions. And if you don't agree, it doesn't mean we can't be friends.

I don't like Bobby B. If you do, and can't agree, then so be it. I hate that this creep came between us.....

Katie,

You're over-reacting.

Bob and Spiritual Tramp never related their feelings regarding Gary Hinman, at all.
You are surmising several things, which they never expressed.

Moreover...

Bob simply reported what Beausoleil had to say, in regards to the Capote interview.
He shared information related to the thread topic.
That's what we're here for...

If Bob agrees with Beausoleil's assertion, (that Capote may have distorted some of the facts)... why does that bother you?

Has it crossed your mind... that Bob, could be right?

I don't know Capote, from a hole in the ground... and neither do you.

Isn't it possible that Capote MAY have distorted some of the facts... as Beasoleil suggests?

I highly doubt any of us know anything about Capote, beyond the superficial.

Because you hate Beausoleil... it in-turn has to follow, that Capote is an honest man???
I'm not seeing the connection.

I personally believe that Beausoleil is a liar... or, at least, has been... at times in the past.
BUT...
Does that mean BB's opinion can NEVER be accurate?
Does that mean, that Capote can't ALSO be a liar?

Katie...
You're over-reacting on this...

You don't know Capote from Adam.
I don't see why you're defending him so vehemently... and viewing Bob's opinion, as a personal affront.

I have to be missing something here...

Here's a little tidbit about Capote the man. I think it reflects his quality of being honest and open. In fact I'd say Capote was completely fearless about telling the truth.

In approx 1977 I was watching a debate about pornography with Capote and several other eggheads from various universities and newspapers.
One lady made a statement and then denied it's meaning and intent to which Capote replied, "Madam that is precisely what you said". He had completely silenced this woman to the point that she didn't dare speak again fearing she would be once again held accountable for her words.
Touche' I remember thinking. Capote had run her through. In today's terminology I guess you could say Capote had verbally bitch slapped her for being disingenuous.

bobby also went strutting back to spahn and according to decarlo was acting like he had got some girl's "cherry." then he threatens the people in the courtroom saying he "was at war with everyone" and "you better hope i don't ever get out." i don't care what capote said or didn't say this person should not get released. he's now housed in oregon, so my taxes are feeding and housing him and i'm ok with doing that for the rest of his life.

Let me try to bring some clarity, even temperment, and sanctamony to this blog. The interview begins by saying that bobby was in prison for a full decade when the photo with capote was taken. That could only mean this interview was in the 80's? Next, beausoliel, is most definatly a brilliant musician, and a great artist as is charlie. You don't have to agree with their pagan leanings to give credit where it's due. In terms of condeming someone as evil because they committed an evil act, is a little bit simplistic. Sometimes people committ an evil act and then repent to god, were not the judge.lastly, mr. poriot, women are not the total victims of violence, in fact men are twice as likely to be victims of violent crime as women! In fact women perpetrate twice as many child murders as men. Most of the victims are boys! Read the bible if you want to know why the jews have a low birth rate!

Hi Beauders!

Great post as always... and well-stated.
I agree.

Bobby, thanks for your post.

Lynyrd's right. I did over-react. I just assumed something that wasn't even there.

Sometimes my utter disgust for these killers distorts my views and I tend to jump to conclusions.

My apologies to you...and to Missy.

Hi Katie..Thanks for the apology..I am not mad at all..life is too short for such pettiness and I have little patience for that kind of juvenile hocus pocus.

Former Capote home sells for a bundle. He must have had money to own this pricey house. i thought B At tiffanys was his first book.(short story)

OK, how could that interview have been 1973. BB wasn't 31 years old in 1973. This interview was in 1978, because TC said that BB had been in prison a decade, which is 10 years. BB didn't go to prison in 1963. Also, what an arrogant asshole BB sounded like. That bullshit that the Tate victims weren't innocent makes me sick. No wonder they have never let this creep out.

So the part about Sharons "group" burning people on dope deals and cruising the strip for young people t..whip? Bobby was in jail when the murders happened, how did he get this info? Helter Skelter talks of the Polanski/Tate skin flick recovered and returned, but anyone know more of what Bobby is talking about? This is an amazing interview thanks for posting.

Do you notice the difference in family members that are attractive and not? Bobby get so much attention because women find him attractive, and at the same time they over look the fact he is a male prostitute a liar, a murderer, drug dealer. But say when someone like Bob Davis is there? no attention at all. Women who worship murderers and claim moral innocence should be put to death.
