Tex Watson VS Charles Manson

Here's a thought I've had many times, which I'd like to share:

Tex Watson brutally murdered several people VS. Charles Manson guilty of Conspiracy.
Yet... Tex Watson, AKA "Maniac", has actually done "easier" time in prison than Manson.
Tex Watson has a "Ministry", has been married (Kristin Joan Svege), and through conjugal visits was able to have four children.
Charles Manson... on the other hand, has had a much rougher road in prison.

OK... granted, Tex is a "model" prisoner... and Manson continues to bust a few cookies in prison... but, overall... who do you believe should be doing the "hardest time" behind bars?

Personally, I think Tex should be living at the bottom of a fifty-foot concrete well... which the guards use as a latrine... regardless of his behavior!

Somehow... Our justice system has failed on this one.  We're not handing-out fair punishment, based on the men's crimes.  What's your take?

Moreover... isn't it strange, that Manson is known as a serial killer (by those who don't follow the case)... and TEX is virtually unknown (by those who don't follow the case)...when in fact TEX did all the actual killing?

Manson is doing "harder time" and has a worse reputation... when in reality, TEX is the "worse of the two evils".  "Something is sneeky, up in sneekyville"! LOLOL

Weigh-in Folks!

Only my opinion here, but I think the reason Charlie is doing harder time is that "going in the door", he knew what he had to do to survive, he had become "infamous" during the trial, he had to be a bad-ass, and he knew what to do to be put in the PHU, less contact with other inmates that would try and "off" him for their 2 minutes of fame. Pretty smart really.

From what I remember, there wasn't that much publicity during and after Tex's trial..there were no court room antics during his trial so no "sensationalism" or drama to attract as much public curiosity..

I agree with Kimchi. Manson brought so much attention to himself by acting like a crazy maniac before, during, and after the trial. He also is a repeat offender, which should result in harsher treatment. Maybe he did do it for the isolation..or maybe he is really just off his rocker. Smart as a fox.

Do I think that Tex is deserving of being allowed to start a family - no, I find the conjugal visits a farce. Prisioners are being punished for their mis-deeds - they should not have the comforts of law-abiding citizens. How is allowing a prisoner to start a family, maintain a website, etc. a deterrent for others to behave themselves?

Granted, I have never been in prison but I am a tax payer and resent that I am paying for the kids produced from prisoners and for all the other "comforts" they receive. I believe in the chain gang...have them work their debt off to society. That would be a major deterrent.

Hi guys. Thanks for posting this Lynyrd.

I agree 100% with everyone.

Exactly right Kimchi. I remember when the trials were taking place, all the media buzz, girls crawling to the courthouse, chanting, singing, all the antics in the courtroom by Charlie & the girls, shaving heads, carving foreheads. None of that with Tex. I barely even remember his trial.

But when you stop and think that Tex almost single-handedly killed ALL the victims at Tate/Labianca, the girls barely inflicting any wounds at all, and Charlie killed NO ONE, it's pretty bizarre that Charlie gets the crazy, lunatic, maniac label and Tex remains pretty much indiscreet.

Right on Mary. My favorite You Tube video of any parole hearing is the one with Doris Tate at Tex's hearing, and she let him have it with both barrels. Regarding his starting a family, she said "where is my daughter's son? Where is my grandson? You took that all away from us!!"

Doris Tate is my HERO.

SO GLAD YOU'RE WITH US!!!!!!

I agree with you, that Charles was "up against it" moreso from the start, because of all the notoriety he got during the trial.

Does anyone even remember Tex's trial?
I've never read the particulars on how he pulled-off his own "personal" trial... when everyone else was all lumped together.
Didn't he flee... and then turn himself later or something?
A respected friend once told me he came from money... and money talks... and all that.
Anyone?

I also agree... intentionally going to PHU would be a smart move, when you consider:
"On 8/25/1984, he was burned over 13% of body when a Hare Krishna fanatic inmate threw paint thinner and a match at him".

Mary, you'll be happy to note:

"Largely through the lobbying of Doris Tate, mother of murder victim Sharon Tate, conjugal visits for imprisoned individuals convicted of murder were banned in October 1996".

BTW... Kristin divorced Charles after meeting another man in 2003.

Thanks Bobby!
Wow... political connections, and money!
That'll do it every time.

I'l say one thing to Tex's credit.
He certainly knew enough to play his cards right. He sobered-up quick.
He immediately distanced himself from the others... and then showed-up cleanly groomed, and well-dressed for the trial.
Due to his crimes... it didn't help much, but, he did show some common sense at least in that regard (if nothing else).

I've often said... if Manson had played his cards correctly, he may have walked... or at worst, got paroled after twenty years or so.
But... I really don't want to get too deep into that concept.
That's a topic for another thread... unto itself.

Bob, why don't you grab an avatar brother...

Just do a google "image" search... choose any photo that interests you... and upload it!
'Course you could always just use a photo of yourself as some folks do.
Actually... I see you already have a photo in the "followers" list.

Just a polite suggestion.

I read somewhere that she got it banned also...but then I see -

"Over the last 40 years, most new prisons included special buildings specifically designed for "Sunday visits." Today, conjugal visitation programs, also known as the Extended Family Visit, survive in six states: California, Connecticut, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, and Washington.
In June 2007, the California Department of Corrections announced it would allow same-sex conjugal visits. The policy was enacted to comply with a 2005 state law requiring state agencies to give the same rights to domestic partners that heterosexual couples receive. The new rules allow for visits only by registered domestic partners who are not themselves incarcerated. Further, the domestic partnership must have been established before the prisoner was incarcerated."

I need to do further research because this came from wilkipedia...but I do know they still have them in NY.

Hi guys. Lynyrd I don't think Tex's family had that much money. His parents owned a little gas station/store that gave them a moderate income to live nicely. But he did have lots of relatives in that area that had made a name for themselves.

Texas wasn't extradited for 9 months after his arrest in Texas. His lawyer told him he didn't want Tex to be involved in the sensationalism of the trial, and he was hoping to have Tex tried separately from Charlie and the girls, which he did. However, the result obviously was the same, even without the sensationalism.

katie8753 said...

Wow Mary. I thought they stopped those conjugal vists in CA. Let us know what you find out.

Mary said...

Oh, you are right L/S...
2) Family visits shall not be permitted for inmates who are in any of the following categories: sentenced to life without the possibility of parole; sentenced to life, without a parole date established by the Board of Prison Terms; designated Close A or Close B custody; designated a condemned inmate; assigned to a reception center; assigned to an administrative segregation unit; assigned to a security housing unit; designated "C" status; guilty of one or more Division A or Division B offense(s) within the last 12 months; or guilty of narcotics distribution while incarcerated in a state prison.

To Katie...

Tex's lawyer was evidently pretty smart.
He gave his client (Tex) his best chances.
'Course... in Tex's case, what more could any lawyer do anyway???

Now... if Manson had Tex's lawyer (from what I'm hearing), he might have benefited from him.
Manson had some complete bone-head named Kanerek.
Kanerek was known as an obstructionist... he never did any homework... just "objected" to everything.
He was later dis-barred!!
Again... a subject for another thread.

Thanks for you research Mary!!

This blog is gonna revolve around everyone's research... as any good blog should.
I'm simply don't have the time, or the energy to research everything.
No one can.
So again... thanks.

My simple understanding, was that Doris had conjugal visited squashed "for those convicted of murder".
I would imagine a guy serving 5 years for robbing the cash register at a gas station, could still have sex with his wife. LOL
But, again... I'm no expert.

I had no idea, if the rule Doris set in motion, was for California only, or nationwaide.
I'd never read anything that in-depth on the subject, until your research.
So again... Thanks!

You know what I always say Mary:
"If ya can't amaze them with facts, baffl'em with bullshit"! LOLOL
I'm just kidding. : )

HA HA. Ole baby-killin' Tex got a "Dear Tex" letter.

"Sorry Tex, can't come conjugate with you this Sunday. I found a "more fun" guy that can go shopping with me." LOL.

I wonder if she called him Charlie or Tex. He probably wanted to be called "Tex" in the sack.
ROFL.

LynyrdSkynyrdBand said...

Actually Katie...

The conjugal visits ended in 1996... and she divorced him in 2003.

The "Dear Tex letter" prolly said:

"Dear Tex... since you haven't been able to bang me in 7 years... I've found another man.
BTW... he's been banging me for 6 + 3/4 years now already!!!!
LOLOLOL

OUCH... that's gotta hurt, when you're completely helpless behind bars! LOL

Oh well... when you go 'round killing people...
LOLOL

HA HA. "Dear Tex, do you wonder why your youngest child looks like the mailman? Well, I'll give you 3 guesses and the first 2 don't count." LMAO

Hey guys I have a question.

Why do you think they took the bolt cutters and rope to Cielo Drive, but not the LaBianca house? Why did they feel the need to cut the phone lines at Cielo, but not Waverly? And I'm not really sure what the rope for was anyway. I know that Tex wrapped it around their necks for a while, but was that the only reason?

LynyrdSkynyrdBand said...

Katie... I'll have to defer to the other bloggers on that question(s).
I really have no idea. LOL

LynyrdSkynyrdBand said...

...and sorry, the lawyer's name was Kanarek, not Kanerek. (typo)

LynyrdSkynyrdBand said...

Wikipedia says "Kanarek resigned from the bar" in 1990.

I know I read he was disbarred elsewhere.
Now, I gotta look into this guy.
