Man who says he's Charles Manson's grandson won't voluntarily submit to DNA test

A 43-year-old Florida man who says he is Charles Manson’s grandson told a judge Friday he will not submit to a DNA test to determine the validity of his claim unless ordered to do so by the court.

Jason Freeman said he would not voluntarily agree to the test sought by longtime Manson pen pal Michael Channels. Channels’ lawyer, Theodore Theodosiadis, told Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Clifford Klein that he will bring a motion to obtain the sample.

Freeman, wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with “Be The Change,” explained after the hearing his reason for not wanting to voluntarily grant Channels’ request.

“There are people on the other side who are trying to build up a case against me,” said Freeman, adding that he will take the test if the judge orders it because he is convinced of his relationship to Manson.

“To me, it’s an open-and-shut case,” Freeman said. “All my life that’s the way I grew up. That’s all I’ve known.'

Meanwhile, Klein extended until June 21 attorney Dale Kiken’s role as temporary special administrator role over the mass killer’s estate. Kiken originally was appointed to the role on Aug. 28, giving him authority to protect Freeman’s interests, but the term was scheduled to expire Friday.

Kiken is tasked with recovering property, on behalf of Freeman, that the cult leader left behind in prison when he died Nov. 19, 2017, at age 83. The notorious killer died at Bakersfield Mercy Hospital of heart failure triggered by colon cancer that had spread to other areas of his body.

Kiken told the judge that he has already obtained boxes of Manson’s belongings from Corcoran State Prison, but that he has not gone through the items yet, nor does he know their potential value.

“I would guess those are some difficult items to appraise” Klein said.

Klein ordered that redacted documents Theodosiadis obtained from the prison by subpoena be kept under seal and viewable only by lawyers and investigators in the case. Kiken’s lawyer, Alan Davis, said he does not know what information is in the paperwork Theodosiadis obtained.

Freeman said he is unaware of the nature of the items Kiken obtained from the prison, but that the potential value of the property is not as important to him as the spiritual peace he has reached with himself.

“I’m [happy] in my life finally at age 43,” Freeman said. “I know I’m going to go home and go back to work.'”

Freeman said he has four children and works in construction. He said he also trains people in martial arts.

He won a significant court victory when a Kern County commissioner ruled in March that he was entitled to Manson’s remains. Freeman and Kiken maintain that a 2002 Manson will Channels alleges he possesses is a forgery. Channels said the will, filed in Kern County in November 2017, names him the executor of Manson’s estate.

A trial on the competing petitions by Kiken and Channels to be the estate’s permanent administrator has not been set.

I have no dog in this race, and I have absolutely no interest in participating in this drama.

But having said that, I will make one simple observation:

If Freeman has absolutely no doubts regarding his biological ties to Manson, then why wouldn't he be eager to put this matter to rest (with a simple DNA test)?

A DNA sample takes one second to collect.
They swab the inside of your mouth with a Q-Tip, and you're done.

By refusing to take a DNA test, Freeman diminishes his credibility.

Freeman said:
"“There are people on the other side who are trying to build up a case against me".

True.

But, Freeman could defeat ALL of his challengers and detractors with one simple test.

There would be no viable case against him whatsoever, if he passed a DNA test.

The fact that he refuses to take the test, makes absolutely no sense to me.

If he really IS Manson's grandson, then a positive DNA test would clearly benefit him the MOST.

Am I missing something here, or is this Freeman guy just kinda weird?

This shit makes no sense...

(I know, I know... "no sense makes sense").

I agree Lynyrd. What's the big deal about taking a DNA test? But I guess they still have to deal with the validity of the will. Or does a direct relationship with the deceased take precedence over a will giving personal property to a non-family member?

Dill how does that work?

Only in California could a probate issue be dragged out like this. Michael Channels was probably the best friend Charles Manson ever had, but when it comes to the last will and testament, there is a big difference between "friendship" and "kinship". It seems to me Freeman is the son of Charles Manson Jr. (the one that later changed his name and committed suicide). Who wants a dna test done, Michael Channels? I wouldn't take it either. It seems to me Freeman has already taken at least one dna test that proved Charles Manson was his grandfather.

This reminds me of when Casey Kasem was dying and one of his wives and children were fighting over visitation rights. Apparently, Jean Kasem threw a piece of meat at one of them--Piece of Meat

Just wanted to let you all know my mother passed yesterday peacefully in her own bed with her husband holding her just like we hoped. She was 84 had raised four children, ran a ranch, and was a business owner, a lover of music and books, which she passed on to me. The last few days were a little dicey but she is now with her oldest child, who she missed terribly, my brother Gregg who passed 21 years ago this January 8th. I'm ok knowing this is what she would have wanted, Alzheimer's is a horrible disease and robbed her of so much, so I'm glad she whole again with my brother.

Beauders, I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. Alzheimer's is a terrible disease, but as you say, your mother is whole again, smiling in Heaven with her loved ones.

I let Lynyrd know of your mother's passing. He's traveling right now, but he wants you to know that you are in his thoughts and prayers.

I hope you have a safe & happy Christmas!

Speaking of Charles Manson, I hate that guy! I can't believe that anyone in this day and age would want to have anything to do with him.

ANYONE!

There is not a single solitary person who can say he or she benefitted from knowing that fucking loser. He was nothing but a con man, a swindler and a BIG FAT LIAR!!!

He orchestrated these killings and zipped his lips over all these years over the "why". Because he wanted everyone to wonder about it. What a loser!

And if anyone is fighting over his remains, all I can say is "what a waste of time!!

Pick your fights!!

Katie and everyone thank you truth is my mother has been gone along time, her body just caught up with her mind, but thank you. I will of course miss her for the rest of my life but I will be okay. Now for Manson Katie, I think Lynette Fromme, Sandra Good, and Cathy Gillies would disagree with you I think they would say Manson was the most significant person to come into their lives. In some ways I feel bad for Krenwinkel when she says nothing they did was ok, how do you live with that knowing that and spending the rest of your in prison for it? I guess that is her true punishment knowing you wasted the lives of your victims, and your own and your family's and what a true fuck up you are. No wonder she is angry.

Katie I don't think they are fighting for his remains, those have back to nature as far as I know. They are fighting over his name, which translates into $$$.

Thanks Beauders, but who was benefitted by knowing Charles Manson? In other words, who was better off than they were previous to meeting Charles Manson? That's unclear to me.

Thanks and again, I'm sorry about your loss, especially at Christmas!

I love Susan Atkins.

Katie I think you and I agree no one benefited from meeting Manson. I do believe though that Fromme, Good, and Gillies think they benefited.

katie8753 said...

Thanks Beauders. I would love to hear from Fromme, Good & Gilles on how they think they benefitted. Examples, etc. Is Gilles still alive?

That would be interesting to delve into.

And also the men who think they benefitted. The answer is probably zero.

beauders said...

No Gillies died this year. If you can get a hold if Fromme's book Katie, do. Fromme is a great writer (which I already knew from corresponding with her) but her only flaw is that it reads like a great love story which of course you and I know was not the reality.

beauders said...

The men didn't fall in love with Manson that's the difference.

beauders said...

Well I have always suspected Brooks Posten was in love with Manson and probably Paul Watkins.

katie8753 said...

Thanks Beauders. I would get Fromme's book if it's at the library. Otherwise I wouldn't spend money buying it. I've bought so many books on this case that just sit and gather dust now.

I agree that some of those guys had a "bro-mance" with Manson. LOL.

beauders said...

Katie I hope you can get it as it is worth the read.

Long time lurker, just wanted to say I'm terribly sorry for the loss of your mom, beauders.

And, yes, Manson's remains were claimed by Jason a while back, cremated & the ashes were spread somewhere in California. This is in regards to his estate and belongings he left behind.
