Watkins Glen Revisited: A continuation of our conversation on the previous thread...

Bob suggested a trip to Watkins Glen (on the previous thread) which got me reminiscing...

Our thread about the Watkins Glen concert has always been, and still is, one of my favorite blog posts on this website.

The thread was originally posted in 2011. (Holy Crap... we're getting old!)

If I remember correctly, at that time, Bob had told us that his older brother had attended the concert. He shared several memories and facts.

At the time, I really didn't know anything about the concert at all, so I started digging.

The facts and statistics that I found when I started researching, were astounding. And, our "Watkins Glen" thread resulted from that research.

Here's a link to the original thread:

http://www.lsb3.com/2011/03/i-was-researching-famous-watkins-glen.html

The facts and statistics contained there-in (regarding the show) are impressive.

I had also posted accounts from actual attendees of the show (in the comments section), which were equally impressive.

I never felt that the topic got as much attention/conversation as it deserved.

As I said, although it was off-topic, it was one of my all-time favorite threads, spawned by a conversation with one of my all-time favorite bloggers.

Check it out!

For real... if you're into stats and history regarding things like Woodstock or Haight-Ashbury... you'll definitely "dig it".

I even gave the thread a quick "facelift" for the reboot. LOL

Peace!

That was over 8 years ago???

Jeez... you gotta be kidding me. LOL

And Bob has been with us since day one!!

Also with us from day one, were Kimchi, Mary and Starship... and of course, the ornery Katie. LOL

Heck... I was blogging with Starship for years before this blog even opened!
He's one of the "Mount Rushmore's" of blogging.

I wonder how Mary is doing these days.
I always loved that woman.
She was so sweet.
She had the greatest avatar!
I haven't heard from her in 3-4 years... maybe a little more...

Marliese had a great avatar too.
I wonder how she's doing these days.

I've always stayed in touch with Kimchi, who still helps-out with the blog.

Matt Prokes... another great friend and contributor from the past.

Venus and Sunset... two more great friends and contributors who have been around for years.

Sunset is like the "silent partner"... he's not too flashy, but he's always there, responsible and reliable.

Beauders... one of the all-time Greats!
I've been trying to convince Beauders to become a blog author for years now!
She would write killer threads!

Dilligaf... another "Mount Rushmore" of blogging.
We've relied upon Dilligaf for legal input for almost a decade.
He's another blogger capable of writing magnificent threads.

Stormsurge... always good for a hilarious quip! LOL
I've never met anyone funnier (except maybe "Bedpan") from WAY back!

Leary... always good for an interesting conversation.

Lynn... another "blast from the past".
I always liked Lynn. She donated some great threads in the early days. She got disgruntled by the political leanings of some of our members during the election process (and left), but her early contributions cannot be denied.

TomG... always good for a maniacal rant in recent years, but actually provided some great content in the early days.

Cease2 and Lurch... good friends

I probably shouldn't have gone down this road, because I'm sure I'll forget a dozen great people.
That's always the danger of reminiscing like this...

If I've forgotten anyone important from our past, please forgive me...

If there's any old faces still reading the blog, give us a quick HELLO!
We'd love to hear from you!

PEACE!

Thanks Lynyrd, I'm still amazed with what you came up with on the WATKINS Glen concert. My brother was there and couldn't understand why Woodstock got all the fame, hey in few years they can do a 50 anniversary for WATKINS Glen. I'll take my brother. LOL
Thanks again
Bobby.

Thanx for the blog. Lot of great information here, especially some of the stuff Kimchi used to post, photos and documents I would have probably never seen anywhere else. I haven't been on this blog as long as some people so I guess that means I'm not an old fart like everyone else?

I'd heard of the 73 Watkins Glen concert but I'm not very familiar with it. The Band, the Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead are not really bands I listened to much back them. I was listening to Queen's "A Night at the Opera" and Aerosmith's "Featuring Dream On" albums.

There are a number of vids on YouTube of the 73 Summer Jam, here's a decent one--Watkins Glen

Thanks Sunset, that was cool.

Thanks Sunset.
Great footage.

Someone needs to check that narrator for a pulse though. LOL

Holy Crap.
I've never seen anyone speak in a more boring monotone voice.

He reminded me of this guy:

Yeah, that narrator is not Mr. Excitement at all. I love how he says The Band was on their home turf just because the Glen is in Upstate NY. Woodstock, where The Band lived, is still about 200 miles away...that's some kinda turf they controlled...

Mention of the Watkins Glen Concert and the participation of the Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead reminded me of the research of Mae Brussell, who believed that many rock musicians such as Duane Allman died untimely deaths due to their potential for stirring massive anti-war protests.

She said in a 1981 interview, “William Colby's Vietnam Phoenix program, [was] staffed with agents who intensely hated the anti-war, social activists like John Lennon . . . Colby came back to the U.S. to become Director of the C.I.A. at a time (1973) when "Operation Chaos" was in full swing against the hippies, rock musicians, and anti-war protestors.”

Operation Chaos was the code name for a CIA domestic espionage project from 1967 to 1974. It was established by President Johnson and expanded under President Nixon. The following list of names shows that there were many untimely deaths during the period leading up to Watkins Glen.

Brian Epstein (Beatles manager), Aug. 27, 1967
Otis Redding, December 10, 1967
Brian Jones, July 3, 1969
Jimi Hendrix, Sept. 18, 1970
Janis Joplin, October 4, 1970
Jim Morrison, July 3, 1971
Duane Allman, October 29, 1971
Brian Cole (songwriter for Association) August 2, 1972
Danny Whitten (in Neil Young’s Crazy Horse band) Nov. 18, 1972
Berry Oakley (bassist for Allman Brothers) Nov. 11, 1972 motorcycle accident 3 blocks from where Duane Allman was killed earlier in a motorcycle accident
Michael Jeffery (Jimi Hendrix’s manager), Mar. 5, 1973
Rod McKernan (Grateful Dead), Mar. 8, 1973
Murray Wilson (father of Beach Boys, manager and producer) June 4, 1973
Clarence White (one of the Byrds) July 15, 1973

Speaking of rock musicians who died untimely deaths, Dennis Wilson, one of the Beach Boys, hosted the Manson Family at his house. For his hospitality he was rewarded with a threat from Charles Manson, who said “don’t be surprised if you never see your kid again.” Dennis had a seven-year-old son. Charles threatened him also with a .44 caliber bullet, saying there is more where this came from. Dennis later told Vincent Bugliosi that he was the luckiest guy in the world because he lost only his money

On December 28, 1983, Dennis was having a party on a boat with Bill Oster and two women. As he was diving, he failed to come up. This was at 4:25 in the afternoon. His three friends said they thought he was clowning around, but later called the Harbor Patrol and found the body at 5:30, one hour later.

The Los Angeles Herald said that Dennis’s wife called at the boat at 4:30. That would be the exact time he was going under. A woman answered and she was “kind of rude.” She said: “We’ve got some trouble here” and slammed down the phone. That would be the exact time that he was bubbling and waving and nobody jumped in for him.

Medical examiners found a gash on his forehead. The coroner said the gash “didn’t contribute" to his death. He died as a result of “drowning.” He was a hit on the head and drowned in 12 feet of water.

So Dennis was murdered after all, fourteen years later.

Not sure how you come up with murder. It is not unusual for a drowning victim to have bumps, scrapes, or bruises as a result of injuries sustained while thrashing about, trying to survive. A large percentage of drowning victims die because drugs, alcohol, and water do not mix, but that does not equate to murder.

Concert has been cancelled.

I was having a couple beers this afternoon with a guy I hired in the early 2000's and Woodstock cane up so I had to tell him my brother's story and he says I was at the WATKINS Glen concert. I was what fuck I didn't know that. I know it means nothing to all the l s b folks but who else can I tell.
