Ten inmates were injured — at least one seriously — when nearly 50 inmates rioted Friday morning at a state prison in Otay Mesa, state prison officials said.

Shortly before 9 a.m., several fights broke out in the Facility A yard at Robert J. Donovan Correctional Facility, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials said in a news release.

The facility houses inmates classified as medium-security risks, and they were in the outdoor yard for their morning recreation.

Corrections officers quelled the riot with pepper spray after inmates ignored multiple requests to stop fighting, the department said.

No lethal force was used to break up the melee, which took about three minutes to halt, prison Capt. Philip Bracamonte said.

Ten inmates were taken to hospitals. One suffered serious head injuries and was flown to a hospital by helicopter, the department said.

Three of the inmates sustained “major trauma,” and the rest had “minor trauma,” Patrick Walker, battalion chief with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, told OnScene TV.

None of the correctional officers were hurt. Staffers exposed to pepper spray were treated at the prison.

Prison officials said multiple “inmate-manufactured weapons” — commonly known as shanks — had been found at the scene.

Facility A houses about 640 inmates, Bracamonte said, but he was not able to say how many were in the rec yard when the trouble started.

The captain said the investigation will include inmate interviews “to determine if there was any tension on the facility and what may have led up to this riot.”

The riot marks the second time the prison has been in the news this week. According to a federal complaint unsealed Wednesday, a prison employee has been arrested on suspicion of smuggling cellphones into the facility in exchange for about $13,000 in bribes.

In December, two inmates were stabbed when about two dozen inmates rioted in a maximum-security yard.

The 32-year-old prison houses about 3,800 inmates, who are classified at security levels of minimum, medium and maximum, and employs 1,850 people.

Anyone know if Watson was involved? If it happened on the medium security yard I doubt it. Watson is probably maximum security because of his crime, several stabbing murders. Also, he's getting old, he might not even go out on the yard. Sometimes there are inmate locator websites that tell what security level an inmate is, I haven't looked for Watson. California seems to have a lot of riots on the yard.

When I was in minimum in Maryland, we could see a riot taking place at the maximum security prison about half a mile away. At least 50 cop cars and ambulances, maybe 3 helicopters. I think one guard was stabbed to death and another one or two injured. I think an inmate was killed and maybe 15 injured, at least that was the rumors. All I know is that when we were watching it out the window, the guards came and made us get away from the windows.

I didn't even know what prison Watson was in, (they move you around pretty frequently), or what security level he is, maybe I'll look that up sometime.

Thanks Sunset. I don't know where Tex is housed in prison now.

I was reading on his blog today about his reasons for these killings. He claims to be "saved" and maybe he is, I don't know. Susan claimed the same thing. I hope she was right.

But the bottom line is, these killers have all wasted their lives in prison. They've grown old, and their victims will always be young.

They've spent their whole adult lives in prison. I don't know how they felt when Charlie finally kicked off, but it's got to make them think.

Tex Watson moved to California back in the 60's because his parents were badgering him to go to college and work and become something. He decided to move to California because it was nothing but hippies and drugs.

He knew his mother couldn't nag him there.

What a pathetic piece of shit! He offers many excuses for the killings, but the bottom line is, there are no excuses. These are grown people who started following an ex-con and listening to his nonsense. And the reason is because of the drugs.

There is no excuse for Tex Watson hurting his parents like that. I'm sure they died in shame. I know I would.

Tex stabbed Sharon's face, and he also stabbed Abigail's face. As well as stabbing their vital body parts. You can see the stab/slash wounds on their faces in the morgue photos.

He admits in his book that he wasn't accepted by people. Maybe he's talking about women.

That says a lot.

Tex Watson should never get out of prison! I don't care how "saved" he is.

I wonder why these guys like Tex & Bobby weren't drafted into Vietnam.

It is actually very interesting if you read about the draft before December ‘69, and after. The inequities of the draft, say in ‘67, was very much based on both economics, and institutional racism within the political parties. Project 100,000 was an interesting way of bringing in recruits that could not meet prior mental or physical standards, which resulted in great disparity. Also, McNamara also supported drafting minorities as a way of pulling them out of ghettos; he saw it as a noble justification for inherent racism.

Katie, Watson's parents were so ashamed by what he did, that the day after the news hit Texas they had to take their name off their gas station. Of course they supported him through the years and his mother repeatedly told Bill Nelson, "That my boy has personality plus."

Katie do you know about the Smiley Face Killings? If not look them up some people are tying them to the Process. Basically, college age high achieving males are ending up dead in bodies of water after a night of partying. It is often ruled an accidental drowning but when blood work is done, they find these guys are not drunk but have been given a date rape drug. Some investigators are saying these guys are being kept alive and tortured, then murdered and deposited in water. Some have been missing for 70 days then just show up. Their remains are in such a condition that the authorities know they have not been in water for the full time.

beauders said...

Oh forgot when the body is found there is usually a graffiti smiley face painted in the vicinity.

katie8753 said...

Thanks Beauders. Are those murders happening now? I never heard of them.

I can understand Watson's parents being ashamed. Living in a small town like that everybody knows everybody's business. There's nowhere to hide.

beauders said...

As far as I know the murders are still going on

beauders said...

The thing is these murders have been covered a lot by the press and because of that you have to suspect copycats. I would think these guys were murdered but in the early days at least, it was random and smiley faces are something people see in graffiti. I don't think there is any organized group doing this especially the Process. The Process gets blamed a lot but the documentary put out three or four years ago really shows how benign they really were. I was lucky to see the documentary in a Portland theatre, it played only once and the crowd was as interesting as the documentary itself. It is now available on DVD.

Beauders, there was coverage on those smiley faced murders on the Oxygen Channel today. I meant to tell you that this morning, but got busy doing something else.

Tex hurt his knee in a car accident and was rejected by the army. He got his draft notice and back in 2016, acknowledged that it would have been better for all concerned if he had been drafted.

katie8753 said...

Thanks Grim. I've read where he said that he hurt his knee and avoided the draft. He should have been drafted when he was in CA and dropped out of college. The draft board was pretty smart about tracking these guys down.

Bobby, Clem, Bruce, Juan or Paul, or so many others, why weren't they drafted? Most of these guys in the Manson family were of draft age.

grimtraveller said...

Clem was too young, Juan did fight in Vietnam, Bobby probably couldn't be found as he was always on the move, Bruce I don't know and I think Paul dodged it.

beauders said...

Some people claim Watkins and Posten were released from their Vietnam draft after testifying at the trials. Robert Hendrickson also said this was true and since he was around the Family at the time I believe him. Of course Tex was such a killing machine they should have sent him after the trial and if he got killed well it would really be no great loss to humanity.

beauders said...

And Tex's mamma could be proud of 'Mr. Personality Plus,' instead of ashamed and embarrassed.

Beauders, LOL.
