The Lost Tapes of Robert Hendrickson?

Fox Prepares Liev Schreiber-Narrated Charles Manson Doc Special Based On Unseen Archive Footage Of The Cult

EXCLUSIVE: Fox is exploring the gruesome murders carried out by Charles Manson’s ‘family’ in a new Liev Schreiber-narrated documentary special based on a vault of unseen footage of the cult. I hear that the broadcaster has ordered two-part Inside The Manson Cult: The Lost Tapes from Naked Entertainment.

The documentary is a retelling of the Manson story using original 16mm footage that was found in the archives of Robert Hendrickson, the filmmaker behind Oscar-nominated doc Manson who died in 2016. The series will look at how the members, who carried out a number of grisly murders, including the brutal attack on Sharon Tate, went from peace-loving hippies to mass murderers.

The two-parter goes inside Spahn’s Ranch, where the Manson cult lived, to offer an intimate and terrifying look into America’s most murderous group. The special will feature rare photos and new and archival interviews with former Manson cult members, such as Catherine “Gypsy” Share and Dianne “Snake” Lake, as well as key people involved in the Manson case, including prosecutor Stephen Kay and FBI criminal profiler John Douglas.

Directed by Hugh Ballantyne (Finding Jesus), the doc will explore how Manson orchestrated the murders and encouraged a group of mostly young, middle class women to carry out the killings, which he hoped would be blamed on the Black Panthers and lead to a race war.

The doc is produced by Naked Entertainment, the FremantleMedia-backed UK and U.S. production company set up by Simon Andreae, who was Executive Vice President, Alternative Entertainment at Fox Broadcasting between 2013 and 2015. It is the company’s first major U.S. network order, having recently made a number of series for Viacom’s Channel 5 and Channel 4 in the UK. Inside The Manson Cult: The Lost Tapes is exec produced by Andreae, Ballantyne, Richard Dale, Allan Gaba and Dean Egnater. It is understood to have been co-produced in association of British broadcaster ITV.

The special is the latest Charles Manson-related project to emerge as the 50th anniversary of the cult’s most infamous murder, the killing of Tate, approaches next year. Quentin Tarantino’s forthcoming movie Once Upon A Time, which stars Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio also mines this world.

It is the latest Charles Manson project developed by Fox; in 2014, the broadcaster developed a scripted series from American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis and horror director Rob Zombie that was set a year before the Manson family’s murder spree in 1969. However, it never made it to air and was ultimately trumped by NBC’s David Duchovny-fronted series Aquarius, which mined similar territory.

Thanks Starship.

It's all good.
I took care of the details.

I hope you're having a good summer.

Thanks Starship! I wonder if it's gonna be just like that Hendrickson film that was made back in the 70's.

There's a second Hendrickson documentary, "Inside the Manson Gang" that uses lots of the footage that Hendrickson and co shot, that never made it into the "Manson" documentary. In some ways, it's actually a better documentary. Much of the dialogue from both is what comprises Hendrickson's book "Death To Pigs", which, as far as I'm concerned, is a must read.
It's direct conversation and dialogue from many of the players in the saga {Watkins, Poston, Crocket, Manson, Good, Squeaky, Brenda, Clem, Gypsy, Mary, Ronnie Howard, Bugliosi} plus a couple of people that are not widely known {Phil Phillips, Nancy Jordon} but who have some startling things to say. Phillips {who was a jail mate of Charlie's} for example, gives a tremendous insight into the early days on the road when Charlie had just come out of jail and his experiences with and use of LSD. Nancy Jordon had visited Spahn and was a jail mate of Atkins and says Atkins told her about the murders. Quite a few of the quotes that appear in "Helter Skelter" are from this book, which although has only recently seen the light of day, actually dates {in terms of the dialogue} from 1969 to 1972.
The actual film footage is interesting if you like that kind of thing. Not particularly my scene; the book is much more potent.
If the link works, watch it quickly ! You know how these things don't stay up long.

Thanx for he post. Robert Hendrickson is pretty well known, his 2 films "Manson" and "Inside the Manson Gang" are pretty well known. Hendrickson died a couple of years ago I think. I wonder if he actually had any "unseen" film after all these years.

I don't have a lot to add, except I know he protected his copyright viciously. I think he sued E-bay over pirated copies of his films, it was one of the first lawsuits against e-bay if I remember correctly. His film company for "Inside the Manson Gang" was "Tobann films", I think his wife's name was Toby Ann. I think Curt Gentry was also involved with that film, he died under suspicious circumstances, but as best I can tell, it was in no way involved with any Manson members.

sunset77: In his interview with Brian Davis, Jon Aes Nihil told him that Hendrickson said that he had 24 hours worth of footage. Who knows what's true but it would be nice just to release everything, without the weird special effects of "Manson" and "Inside the Manson Gang". I'm up for a 24 hour movie marathon. Anyone remember Filmex?

From what I’ve heard, there was quite a lot of unseen Hendrickson footage that Don Murphy bought...whether this has anything to do with it, I have no idea...

Thanks Sunset! Hi Kimchi!! Good to see you!

Don't you mean Laurence Merrick ? He was murdered in suspicious circumstances although the murderer was caught. Gentry died at the age of 83 in 2014, having been in a hospice.

Robert said that there was enough footage to make at least a 5 episode mini series with the footage he had left over.

Grim, wasn't Laurence Merrick the Elephant Man?

Katie I heard a song by Melanie and remembered you had put one of her songs here on the blog and I asked if she was Sinead O'Connor and you replied it was Melanie. I think Sinead must be a fan and influenced by her because they sound so similar. Sinead is mentally ill, bi-polar and just difficult and in this week of multiple suicides of famous people I hope she doesn't do anything to herself. She has four children and multiple ex husbands so please have good thoughts for her because as difficult as life can be her kids need her. I also think she is a grandmother as well.

Joseph Merrick was the Elephant Man

Thanks Beauders. I knew Sinead O'Connor was troubled when she shaved her head and sang that song Nothing Compares to You. Which was a great song BTW.

I'm sorry she's having so much trouble. I wish her well and I hope that she clings to her children and knows that doing away with herself will only hurt her children.

BTW I know Joseph Merrick was the Elephant Man. I was just ribbing Grim. LOL.

Beauders, you ROCK!!! :)

Got it Katie, I thought you were being serious.

Thanx for noticing that Grimtraveller, I remembered about 3 hours after I posted that comment it was Laurence Merrick that was associated with Robert Hendrickson, that was my mistake, I can't remember everything and I'm getting old.

Wikipedia says " Sharon Tate, one of the victims in the Manson murders, was a former student at Merrick's Academy of Dramatic Arts.[1] His later business was Merrick Studios,[2] 870 N. Vine St. in Hollywood. It was a low-cost acting school, with several students attending via the GI Bill. Merrick was killed by a gunman on January 26, 1977."

There is an article about Merrick here-->http://www.renegadetribune.com/israel-manson-vampirism-freaky-life-laurence-merrick/

grimtraveller said...

William Zamora, one of the jurors, who wrote a superb book on the trial, "Trial by your peers", was also an acting student of Merrick's.

Look up Veronica Compton she was a student of Merricks and a suspect. She went on to bigger things.

I wonder how Debra Tate feels about The Beatles.

grimtraveller said...

That's kind of left field but it is nonetheless, a fascinating question.

katie8753 said...

I was listening to a CD of mine the other day with Beatles songs and Piggies came on and I just wondered how Debra felt when she heard the Beatles' songs associated with the killings, especially since PIG was written on Sharon's door.
