The Other Side of Madness (1971 Video)

It's been a long time since I've seen this movie. It was originally titled "The Helter Skelter Murders"......

At the opening credits of the movie, it says "1975". However, IMdB indicates "1971", with which I agree, as some of the scenes were filmed at Spahn Ranch:

There was a comment left on IMdB by a lady that said she was involved in making the movie.  She said the Rock Concert was filmed outside of Kansas City using real hippies...lol

Just to advise, there is a little nudity and adult subject matter, so before you view, be advised...

It's kind of fun to watch to see more footage of Spahn Ranch, the Hall of Justice, and Los Angeles back in the day....

Enjoy!

Thanks Kimchi.

I watched this movie a long, LONG time ago.
In fact, it's been so long, I hardly remember any of it.

I'll have to give it another viewing.

The movie sorta creeps you like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The B&W film adds to the creepy effect. Though Hippies are still advertised as peace and love there really was a creepy side to the entire Hippy movement. Most Americans were either afraid of them or they hated them.
I had an uncle who ran a barber shop in tiny Sumter SC in the 60s. A Hippie came in for a trim one day and my uncle took an instant dislike to him. He cut a big chunk of hair off the Hippie and the Hippie jumps out the chair mad as hell. He was yelling at my uncle who then physically threw him out into Main Street. My uncle hated nonconformist types. I'm surprised he didn't beat the crap out of the Hippie.
God he hated Hippies! Utter contempt for them. If you sat in his barber chair you were going to get a Crew Cut whether you wanted one of not. It was like that restaurant on Saturday Night Live that only served Cheese Burgers.

Supposely Polanski and Warren Beatty collected most of the copies of this film to destroy them. They obviously missed one.

I watched this film a long time ago also. It looks to me that if you pause the YouTube vid a 4:53 it says, "Copyright 1970 Fantasy Films LTD." The American Film Institute webpage lists the production date for this film as "Jun 1970--Spring 1971 in Kansas City and Los Angeles"

It certainly sounds to me like the song that begins at around 11:10 of the YouTube video is "Mechanical Man" sang by Charles Manson. There are other videos of Manson singing that song on YouTube and they sound identical to me. I'm not sure, I don't know if Manson was credited on this film, the posted video is only 48 minutes. The AFI web page says the entire film is "Duration (in mins): 80, 85 or 91". This film might have been one of if not the earliest attempt for someone to make money from the murders.

I have this very dvd in my hands right now. From the back jacket it says, "Superbly photographed and directed by award-winning filmmaker Frank Howard, with sequences actually filmed with the "family" at the Spahn Ranch. Charlie Manson performs his songs "Mechanical Man" and "Garbage Dump" on the soundtrack.

I've never really watched the whole thing though, just the murder scenes which are just about laughable. Shocking, I know.

Hey where's the rest of the movie? It ends with them climbing the fence to Cielo Drive.

This is one of most awful movies ever made. Right up there with Plan 9 From Outerspace and Manos: The Hands of Fate. And those nudes scenes make you want to retch.

Dunno if I'd say that movie was that bad Katie. I thought it did capture the bizarre nature of the Family under Charlie throughout the entire crime saga. Funny you compare it to campy horror movies. My VHS copy of Hendrickson's Manson73 still has a round sticker on it saying "horror". It was cataloged in movie stores as a horror flick yet it was a documentary.

Well Mr. P, even a documentary can be revolting. Were those actual Manson family members in that nude scene in the water or were those extras?

I don't know how you would do a casting call for that kind of filth. Maybe there is one. A fat lady with big boobs floating around in the water and a fat naked guy climbing a tree that he almost downs because he's so fat?

I don't know if you like the Manson family, but I don't. Especially if I have to watch them waddle around like pigs.

And they WERE the pigs. LOL.

And why did they play Strauss' Blue Danube??? WTF?

Hey, I could get cast as fat naked guy. I might need a stunt double for the climbing the tree part.

Apparently there was a Manson death hoax going around yesterday, but nobody noticed.

Thanks Starship. If they keep "crying wolf" with these hoaxes we might not believe it when he finally does croak. LOL.
