Outlaw Shack... "The Family", Page 66:
"The so-called outlaw shacks, small movable huts looking like tornado-devastated motel units from the 1920's, were located near the back ranch. These shacks were evidently used as props during the heyday of the good guys versus bad guys kind of movies shot at the ranch."
Happy Father's Day... 'Cuz, "everyone should have a daddy like Charlie". LOLOL
Continues... "No, everyone... deserves... a daddy like Charlie".  : )

What a romantic little bungalow.
I bet every young girl, dreams of losing their virginity, and conceiving their first child, in a beautiful little cottage like this.
LMAO : )

Lynyrd that just cracks me up when you put your name on this stuff.

Were you charging them rent? HA HA.

Yeah, what a dream house. Let's see, around 25 people in about a 10' x 8' shack with one window.

Reminds me of that Marx Brothers movie when they're all in that closet and someone opens the door and they all come spilling out. LOL.

AAHHH, I LOVE the Marx Brothers!!! HA HA.

Who is that guy crouching down there?

Charlie needed to get them boys out there with paint brushes and tools and turn that into a condo.

I wonder how many mattresses fit in there.

Maybe they had to "take a number". HA HA.

katie8753 said...

Notice it's on wheels in case they needed a quick get-away. LOL.

katie8753 said...

You could put a sail on that and turn it into a prairie schooner. Might make it up to Barker's. LOL.

MrPoirot said...

Does anybody know if that cabin is one of what was called the Outlaw Outlaw Shacks?

LynyrdSkynyrdBand said...

Poirot... that's definitely the "outlaw shack".

That's how the photo is/was labeled when I received it... and how it remains labeled on my desktop.

Whether there is more than one "outlaw shack"... I have no idea.
But... that's definitely one of them.

Truth be told... you're the reason, I hunted this photo down.
You were voicing interest in the "backhouses" at Spahn's a couple threads back... and so, I started looking for stuff.

Enjoy!

LynyrdSkynyrdBand said...

I doubled-checked the e-mail correspondence.
That's definitely an "outlaw shack".

My complete guess... is that it got the name "outlaw shack"... 'cuz that's the purpose it served, while shooting the western movies... after all, this was a "movie ranch".
That was likely the "bad guys" place.
That's also likely why it's on wheels.
They probably moved it around the movie set, as needed.

I could be totally wrong on those two presumptions/guesses.
If anyone knows for sure, how it got it's name... or why it's on wheels... feel free to correct me.

For whatever the reason(s)... that's an "outlaw shack". LOLOL

If I'da been a hippy back then, which I wouldn't ever be in the first place, and I was guided toward that piece of shit house and someone said "darlin' this is your new home", I'da said "are you outta you're fucking mind????"

So all these "intelligent" little rich bitches, i.e., Sandy, Squeaky, Brenda, Kitty, Cappy, Gypsy, Horseface, Bitemarks, Skullduggery, etc. got a mop & broom and considered this home???

Give me a break!

Was living in a nice home and having to follow the rules to keep curfew and clean your room THAT BAD??? To end up in a little "room" with 25 other dirty folks. Eccchhh...

That's a whole big ball of WRONG!!

MrPoirot said...

Thanks Lynyrd. One more piece in the puzzle found.

Tex went back and hid in the Outlaw Shack(s) after the Tate murder. Yet if you look at Tex's detailed map he drew of Spahn Ranch he excluded the outlaw shacks.

katie8753 said...

Someone commented a while back that "the girls always kept a clean and tidy house".

Yeah right!

I don't know why you want to re-write history.

The facts are these:

They lived like pigs.
They smelled like pigs.
They ate what pigs eat.

Charlie had trouble getting bikers to stay there for long because of the stench of the clothes pile.

They didn't care about the environment. They didn't care about animals or plants.
They all had bad breath and syphillis.

So those of you who want to fantasize about that being a "cool" place can go to Nirvana or Shangrila, it will be easier to believe. HA HA.

LynyrdSkynyrdBand said...

From here... I'll have to defer to anyone who has further information Poirot.

Geography of these places, is my weak point... as I've said, and admitted, hundreds of times.

That's an outlaw shack... where-abouts it was situated on the Spahn's property, and why Tex left it off of his map... I have no idea.

I found it funny... that Tex labeled one building the "in-Case Place".
Maybe that was the shack. LOLOL

Many knowledgable folks flow through here each day.
I'm sure more information on this photo/shack, will surface over time.
That's why blogs post photos... to initiate discussion, and hopefully bring forth information.

Anyone??
Have at it...

Mr Poirot replies:

Yes it's possible that terminology differs from person to person.

I've wondered if Tex left off the Outlaw shacks from his map because of guilt. He may have left the shacks off subcontiously since he slept there after killing 8 people.

The yellow area is the BACK RANCH. The green area is the MOVIE RANCH. When people speak of Spahn Ranch as it pertains to the Family they are actually referring to a long area that runs along the creek which appears as a dark tree line in that aerial pic. Family members travelled routinely between the movie ranch and the back ranch by a dirt road that paralleled the creek. As far as I know this ariel foto is the ONLY pic of the BACK RANCH. The outlaw shacks are located somewhere in the green area(bottom part). The outlaw shacks were somewhere behind the movie ranch.

in the 'inside the manson gang' film theres a scene where hendrickson
see the outlaw shacks and is told not to go back there.
its a good distance from the camera but you can see what looks like a couple of small buildings in the background.
if anyone can get a screenshot you might be able to get a good look at them.

katie8753 said...

Mr. P., it looks like the back ranch is quite a ways from the front or main ranch from the aerial map you provided.

>>>Mr. P said: The outlaw shacks are located somewhere in the green area(bottom part). The outlaw shacks were somewhere behind the movie ranch.>>>

If the green area is the Main movie ranch, you're saying the outlaw shacks were there?? I thought they were at the back ranch???

Lynyrd, I'm assuming they lived in more than one of these outlaw shacks. There isn't room for all of them in one of these.

MrPoirot said...

Yes Katie I am seeing that too. I'm looking for stuff to see if I can nail this down. I think that is the dirt road between the movie ranch and the back ranch. Can't prove that yet either.

MrPoirot said...

For instance: notice the big boulder and low hill behind the outlaw shack. I know that's a hint but I haven't deciphered it yet. The hill behind the movie ranch was much taller than the hill in that pic.

Katie I am a friend.

It's been 105 degrees here every day. Low of 95 degrees.

I don't see any of the ATWA people putting out water for the trees or animals. Don't see Sandy or Squeaky out here!! Or AC.

I do that every day. I put out water for the trees and animals. I guess that ATWA is a made up bullshit thing for you know who to get out!!! HA HA.

Because no one has been here to save things.

Otherwise they'll go extinct.

katie8753 said...

Mr. P., I'm sorry. I didn't mean to send you anything upsetting.

It's so hot here. I can't think anymore. Even with A/C it's hot.

I'me slowly dying with my flora and fauna.

I've got to deal with it.

Lynyrd, how funny! It's nice to come here and see a little humor. Yeah, i wonder if this was Stephanie not a virgin and already pregnant with someone else's baby Schram's idea of a 'palace.' Take me to my palace, Charlie.

Yeah Stephanie was a real winner. A pregnant 17 year old, running around with a guy that's "not my boyfriend", stops to use the bathroom and then takes off with a little clown driving a Hostess Bread Truck because he offered her a sweet roll.

A girl like that has GOT to be easily impressed. HA HA.

katie8753 said...

Well the defense team must have told Casey Anthony to start looking sad. She spent a lot of Saturday with her head down.

People are really noticing that she looks aloof and detached throughout all the discussion of her daughter's body!!

katie8753 said...

Mr. P., are you still working on it??

Marliese said...

ah...thanks Lynyrd.

Looking at this photo, i wonder if this is the same shack where Charlie and Stephanie had been "making love for a couple of hours" when the cops came in "with guns drawn" and busted him for supposedly having a half smoked joint and Stephanie for indecent exposure, both dropped because it wasn't even grass and there's no law about not having a top on inside a house. This was a few days after the big raid with those charges dropped because of an improper warrant. ~ From the Emmons book and he has Charlie saying someone had to be snitching because the cops didn't even know where the outlaw shacks were....and "the snitch had to be found and got rid of."

Can't you just picture it, if not this charming bungalow, another one just like it...

Marliese said...

Katie, Hi, A little clown in a hostess bread truck! LOL. Love your posts. Guess he was more appealing than the guy she dumped, at least til he smacked her across the face and enrolled her murder school, huh.

"The Big Man" Clarence Clemons has passed-away.

Great saxophone player.
I always loved his playing on "Rosalita".

One article described Clemons as "Sideman Clarence Clemons".
Sideman? Are these people kidding me??
No respect...

LynyrdSkynyrdBand said...

At their concert in Portsmouth, Virginia on Sunday, June 19, 2011, Phish covered Thunder Road as a tribute to Clemons.

"Another surprise was a tribute to Bruce Springsteen sax man Clarence Clemons, who died Saturday. Phish played a fairly straightforward (and somewhat sloppy) version of Springteen's classed "Thunder Road" with Anastasio mirroring Clemons dramatic horn lines on guitar".

katie8753 said...

Marliese, according to Ed Sanders, Charlie & Stephanie went to her sister's house and had dinner, and the whole time Charlie was running his mouth as usual, but he was talking about people being slaughtered and being found dead on their lawns.

Sounds like real interesting dinner conversation!

If I had brought a guy like that to my sister's house, she would have had me committed. HA HA.

Mr Poirot replies:

I am wondering about the term "behind the ranch". What does that mean? If you look behind the ranch there is the creek bed and then the hill. I'm thinking that outlaw shack was actually on the dirt road between the movie set and the back ranch which are a 1/4 mile apart on the dirt road. Could they have meant the area between the movie set and the back ranch when they said "behind the ranch"? Watson calls the back ranch "the old ranch house" in this map.
