Book Club Discussion #2
Ed Sanders, "The Family" - Pages 23-43

Here we’re introduced to the “Spiral Staircase”, and as Sanders describes… “devil worship and satanic activities”.
Manson meets Beausoleil, and a few days later, visits him at Hinamn’s, where Bobby was staying.
The relationship with Kenneth Anger is covered, as well as the movie “Lucifer Rising”.
A dose of sensationalism is thrown in by Sanders… “Bobby was on an all meat diet, and believed himself to be the devil”.
You gotta wonder how true that statement is.

Next we visit Wavy’s Hog Farm, and of course, Diane Lake enters the picture.
Sadie is impregnated in Mexico.
A woman named Melba Kronkite is covered fairly thoroughly.

The black bus picks-up Nancy, Little Patty and Ella Bailey, along their travels.

Manson’s jail friend Phil Kaufman is released from jail… and Manson re-connects with him.
Manson meets Harold True, through Kaufman.
True resides next door to a home owned by Leno (or Leno's family).

“Pooh Bear” is born in a shack. LOL
Sandy Good, the 24 year old daughter of a stock broker joins the pack.
Sandy reportedly had great skill in coaxing money from her dad.
Paul Watkins joins the group.

Shortly after this… Bruce Davis, whom the family encountered some months previous, shows-up on a motorcycle, and becomes an avid member.

Gary Hinman bails Snake and Sandy out of jail in May ‘68.

Bobby meets Gypsy while shooting “Ramrodder”, and the rest is history there. LOL

Enter Dennis Wilson!
Dennis picks-up Pat and Ella (hitch-hiking evidently?), and again, the rest is history.
The Family pisses through much of his money, etc.
Melcher and Jakobson get involved with Manson… or vice-versa.

Dean Moorehouse actually re-emerges… and stays-on with the family, as a “gardener” for Wilson, and reportedly sets records in the acid-dropping department. LOL
Brooks Posten meets the family through Dean.

All american boy Tex hit’s the scene… wig shop and all. : )

Garbage runs are had.
Sadie takes a contingent, in search of a “permanent place”.
This splinter group is called the “Witches of Mendocino”, by Sanders.
They end-up arrested of course.

This section ends with Sanders mentioning the “Straight Satans”, and “Satan’s Slaves”.

>>>Lynn said: Question: Did the Manson family run into Wavy's Hog Farm in San Francisco or was it when it was in Los Angeles?>>>

Lynn sorry I'm running a little behind now. I haven't read the entire required reading, but I have gotten to the Hog Farm.

It was located on a mountaintop in the San Fernando Valley.

I don't know if that's LA or not.

Lynn it's another thread on this blog, I believe submitted by Mary. But since your comment was delayed, it might have been submitted by you. Thanks!

Lynn I believe there's an address for Tex's wig shop in Glendale. I don't have the time to find it now, but will look. I believe he lived near the wig shop with the guy that was part owner. Actually it went from a "wig shop" to a "pot shop".

Anyone else know????

Hi Lynn!

Directly from the book... bottom of page 36:

"Before Manson, Tex began to work as a wig dealer, opening a hair store called "Crown Wig Creations LTD", at the mouth of Benedict Canyon. He and a buddy from Denton, Texas were in partnership. The shop was located at 9499 Santa Monica Boulevard, near Beverly Hills".

"At the time he met Manson, Watson seems to have been living at a beach house at 18162 Pacific Coast Highway. He drove an elegant 1935 Dodge Pick-up truck".

LynyrdSkynyrdBand said...

Lynn...

The location of the Hog Farm is less specific (as Katie said).

It simply states (page 25):
"The commune known as the "Hog Farm", famous throughout the 1960's counterculture, was located on a mountain-top in the San Fernando Valley".

Kimchi is good with California geography.
She could probably help, when she stops-in.

Thanks for the link to the article!
I had a bit of a mix-up with the comment moderation.
I got your comments a bit delayed.
I received the same article suggestion from Mary, via e-mail.

I'll add your name to the credits... under that thread.
Again, Thanks!!!

Lynn, the book goes on to say:

"Tests at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute later showed that during this trip to Manson void, Watson's IQ dropped 30 points, probably through use of drugs like telache or belladonna...."

Well, I'm not sure what Watson's IQ was before the "Manson void" but I doubt if it was genius level. So I'm assuming it dropped to around 70 or so. HA HA.

We haven't gotten this far yet, but Watson describes his "belladonna trip" very distinctly. That shaggy haired mug shot of him was on belladonna. He said he was barking like a dog at children.

Sorry folks... my bad.

>>>AC said: (In answer to the question "who was the mastermind".

What does that mean????

>>>It is someone with connections to the bike club, the drug sales ladder in that region, illegal gambling and porn. I think the Col. is onto something with that one bodyguard dude. However I don't know the shot-caller's name.>>>

So you're saying that someone in the Straight Satans ordered the murders at HTLB???

>>>If they told me they'd have to kill me, hahahaha! But it's not Charles. The bike club mechanic is NOT the guy who gives orders to everyone else.>>>

Okay...hellooo...

>>>It's said that Danny DeCarlo was Pres. of the Straight Satans but that is not true, he was just a member. I bet DeCarlo knew, though. I further bet that individual did time with Charles at one time or another.>>>

Soooo...you still don't know....

Which leads me to believe it's still Charlie.

Lynn, I'm gonna ask Kimchi to come down, and help you with the California locations.
She's pretty sharp with that stuff.
Geography is not really my strong suit.

Kimchi said...

Lynn, from what I remember, I think Tex lived on Glendale Blvd, west of where the Metrolink station is now...

And not far (East)from Waverly, there's a lot of apartments there.. surprised me how nice the area is too...but it's 40 years after the fact...

I don't know much about California or LA, I have been there several times, but that doesn't make me an authority by any means.

But if Tex had a wig shop near Beverly Hills and lived on Highway 1 (PCH) isn't that an expensive part of town? I don't know where he got the money to afford that.

How ironic. Tex lived near Waverly Drive???

Thanks Kimchi & Lynn for filling us in on locations!

Hi Bobby. Thanks for the website address!!

Hi Bob!

Thanks brother.
I had never seen that website before.

katie8753 said...

Kimchi you think Tex lived on Glendale Blvd.

Sanders says that he was living at a beach house at 18162 Pacific Coast Highway.

I'm wondering when he moved to Glendale Blvd.

katie8753 said...

Okay this is from "Will You Die For Me" by baby-killin' Tex:

"Rich had moved in with me while I was still at the place in Silverlake. Once I quit school we moved to an apartment in West Hollywood, then to a house on Wonderland Drive, up in Laurel Canyon behind the Strip."

Wonderland Drive. Isn't that where Long Dong Silver met his demise?

"We figured if the wiglet gimmick worked for Mike and Phil, it would work for us. We called our place Love Locs-love was the big word right then-and opened up in a tiny former beauty parlor on San Vicente off La Cienega."

Okay guys, is this near Glendale Blvd?

"In the meantime, we'd gotten bored with Laurel Canyon and moved out to Malibu, a house right on the beach."

He says they moved to a house in Malibu. How could they afford that????

Kimchi said...

>>How ironic. Tex lived near Waverly Drive???<<

Yes, that's been discussed many times, mainly by Nelson I think, because Suzanne and Tex lived so close to each other at one time..

Silver Lake and Los Feliz are all in the same general area...

>>Okay guys, is this near Glendale Blvd?<<

No, but if you were to take Sunset from Hollywood (City of)going east til it ends, then zig zag a few streets you get to Glendale Blvd..on a good day maybe 20 minutes or so..

I'm from the "other" valley, but worked in LA, so I'm not an expert in that part of town..

And yes, I read that Tex lived on Wonderland Drive...(yeah, made famous by John Holmes) I thought he left a trunk in the back yard there or something?

To afford Malibu he must've sold a lot of drugs...or maybe he lived in one of those bungalows at Topanga that are gone now..

katie8753 said...

Bobby, you're right. Tex & Rich were dealing drugs when the wig bidness went "poof". HA HA. Must have been lucrative though to afford a place like that.

Don't know what that cost in 1969, but now....you'd have to have a lot more than pot money. HA HA.

>>>Kimchi said: >>How ironic. Tex lived near Waverly Drive???<<

Kimchi, I'm not sure where Suzanne was living in 1967/1968. I believe Leno bought the house on Waverly Drive from his mother sometime in late 1968. Suzanne was living in an apartment not far from there in August of 1969, but I'm not sure where she was living in 1968. Anybody know?

I've always said, and I still think, that Suzanne had something to do with Leno & Rosemary's murder. Not because she knew Tex....but because she was dating a Straight Satan who knew Charlie.

He left a trunk in the back yard? I haven't heard that one. Wonder what was in it??? Sharon's clothes. HA HA. Just kidding.

>>To afford Malibu he must've sold a lot of drugs...or maybe he lived in one of those bungalows at Topanga that are gone now..>>

From what I'm reading, there were some rundown apartments/bungalows that were more affordable than a Malibu beach pad.

Didn't Wilson move out to Malibu to get away from the leeching Manson Family? And also, Melcher moved out to his mom's pad in Malibu. He left Cielo Drive very abruptly. Even Candance Bergen was shocked at how fast they left. Makes me wonder if he was feeling the need to hide.

I'm not sure what was affordable back then, but California is off the charts for land now. At least it was a few years back.

You'd have to sell a LOT of pot to pay the rent. HA HA.

Waverly is not a continuous road. It splits off (as many roads do) and picks up again. There is a section of Waverly Drive which has a lot of apartments- it is in Silver Lake.

I was in Malibu recently and there had been affordable beach cottages but they have been torn down. There are still a few interesting motels that may have been around back in the day- I believe they are off PCH.

I think Glendale Blvd was a very short stint- may have been when he arrived in California. I had read it in a book and will have to do some research- this week has been too busy to do so.

SG Valley...the one nobody acknowledges!

LOL

Kimchi said...

I guess the San Gabriel Valley was "Infamous" in it's own right:

1. Susan was born in San Gabriel
2. Bobby lived with his grandmother in El Monte
3. Leslie was from Monrovia
4. TJ had an address in La Puente
5. The Covina distillery robbery
6. Steven Parent was from El Monte
7. The family lived in Monrovia during the trial
8. They caught Como in El Monte
9. The Nazi headquarters was in El Monte (I do remember that!)

I know I'm missing something...thank goodness I was too young to run into these people.
